Environmentally Friendly Beverages

July 9, 2021

Starting this fall, New Brunswick public

schools will only sell beverages that come in

environmentally friendly packages.

The switch is happening because of growing

concerns many students, parents, faculty,

and staff have about single use plastics and

their negative impact on the climate.

The schools will no longer sell plastic

bottled beverages in favor of aluminum cans

and bottles.

Water and juice sold in vending machines

and à la carte [ah la cart] will come in either

aluminum bottles or cans.

The school district is encouraging non-

plastic beverage vessels. They are not

banning students from bringing their own

plastic bottles, unlike with glass vessels.

The board of education has determined that

the price of water will increase due to the

now environmentally friendly packaging.

However, William James, the Head of the

New Brunswick Board of Education makes

clear that there are more benefits than

drawbacks with the aluminum water bottles.

(SOT: 0:04) “If properly taken care of, any

student could reuse one aluminum bottle for

months”.

The school district will announce new prices

for these infinitely recyclable beverage

vessels in late August.
