current Top 5 Songs
Long Days — Matt Burton
This is a top five song for me because this song is a reminder to live in the present. I tend to focus on the future rather than live in the moment and this song’s message and vibes remind me to take a deep breath. The music reminds me of aimless driving in the rain with friends. The piano and drums create a very mellowed and chill vibe that I particularly love in music. If I were to summarize this song in a phrase it would be; carpe diem.
Landslide — Fleetwood Mac
This is top five because it’s a song about change from the perspective of someone who finds solace in stability. For the past three years my life has been nothing but constant change, which has not meshed well with me because I like stability. This song is a reminder to me that change is inevitable and that I should make my peace with that. Of course, with the amount of times I have played this song it’s clear I haven’t made peace with that. . .but it’s the sentiment that counts.
Peanut Butter Waffles — Ryan Caraveo
This song is among my top five because the artist, Ryan Caraveo, manages to juxtapose heavy lyrics with relatively happy music. He expresses many facets of the inner workings of his mind, some of which I find relatable. One aspect of this song that stands out to me is how he expresses finding comfort in loneliness but at the same time is uncomfortable being alone. Another thing I like about this song is the anxiety inducing nature of the outro. This is caused by the echoing chant paired with the growing intensity of the music.
Soul Searcher — Jazz Cartier
Soul Searcher by Jazz Cartier is among my top five because it’s so introspective. This song is about reflecting and coming to grips with the past self. I find this to be an important part of growth because, in order to be able to grow you have to understand yourself. This song also reminds me that what happened, happened. There is no changing the past.
Are You That Somebody — Aaliyah
This song is on my top five because it reminds me of my childhood. This song was played a lot in my house. This song gives an ambiance of summertime, relaxing, and not having any stress. It reminds me of squinting at nickelodeon cartoons from the dining room table while shoveling cinnamon toast crunch into my mouth on Saturday mornings. Fun fact connecting me and this song: I was named after the artist Aaliyah.
